The Federal Constitutional Court acts only in response to an application. Its types of proceedings are listed in the Basic Law and in the Federal Constitutional Court Act.
How cases are assigned internally is governed by the Federal Constitutional Court Act, the resolutions of the Plenary and the Senates’ case assignment plans.
In most proceedings, a three-member Chamber makes the decision; in proceedings with fundamental constitutional significance, the decision is made by the competent Senate.
Every year, the Federal Constitutional Court publishes a list of major cases in which it intends to reach a decision during the current year.
The Annual Statistics inform about which new cases were received and which cases were completed during the previous year and compare the data to numbers from past years.
