Information about the renovation phase
The ensemble of buildings which was constructed for the Federal Constitutional Court between the Schlossplatz and the Botanical Gardens between 1965 and 1969 will undergo complete renovation during the next three years. The renovation, which is necessary among other things for energy-saving reasons, will involve above all extensive building measures for heat insulation and fire protection. In particular, the window glazing in the entire complex of buildings will be exchanged, the roofs will be completely renewed and the steel construction of some parts of the buildings will be laid open.
To ensure a smooth operation of the Federal Constitutional Court, the 16 justices of the Federal Constitutional Court and most of the staff have moved to a temporary residence in the Waldstadt district of Karlsruhe during the three-year building phase. For the Federal Constitutional Court’s interim premises, three former German Air Force staff buildings approximately 2 km away from the Federal Constitutional Court’s permanent seat have been refurbished as office space; the lecture hall building has been converted into a courtroom with a spacious foyer area. The former command room now houses the Court’s plenary hall. However, the move of large parts of the Federal Constitutional Court to temporary premises not only ensures that it will be possible for the Court to manage its heavy workload without major disruptions caused by the renovation measures. At the same time, the logistic optimisation resulting from the move to the Waldstadt seat will considerably shorten the overall building time at the Court’s Schlossbezirk residence.
