Meeting of the German-language constitutional courts, the CJEU and the ECtHR at the Federal Constitutional Court

On 21 and 22 October 2018, the meeting of the German-language constitutional courts of Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany, the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights, known as the “Sechsertreffen”, was held at the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. The President of the Federal Constitutional Court, Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Andreas Voßkuhle, and Vice-President Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Kirchhof received delegations from the Austrian Constitutional Court, headed by President Dr. Brigitte Bierlein; from the Swiss Federal Court, headed by President Dr. Ulrich Meyer; from the Liechtenstein State Court, headed by President Dr. Hilmar Hoch; from the Court of Justice of the European Union, headed by President Prof. Dr. Koen Lenaerts, and from the European Court of Human Rights, headed by Vice-President Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Angelika Nußberger. In the expert discussions that took place during the visit, the representatives of the courts discussed how to safeguard the independence of the judiciary, and new dangers posed by private actors to democracy and to the state under the rule of law.

The meeting takes place every two years and is hosted in turn by one of the participating institutions.
