The Federal Constitutional Court celebrates its 75th anniversary

Type: Press Release , No. 1/2026 , Date:

2026 marks the 75th anniversary of the Federal Constitutional Court. This milestone will be celebrated with a number of events throughout the year.

As part of the celebrations, an official ceremony will be held at the Stadthalle at the Convention Centre in Karlsruhe, 75 years to the day after the formal opening of the Federal Constitutional Court on 28 September 1951. Among the expected attendees at the ceremony on 28 September 2026 is Federal President Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who will give a speech.

The Federal Constitutional Court will also open the doors of its buildings at the Schlossbezirk in Karlsruhe to the public on 16 May 2026. There will be a number of different programmes on the day through which the public can learn more about the tasks and structure of the Federal Constitutional Court. Visitors can also get a view from the inside of the Court buildings designed by architect Paul Baumgarten and completed in 1969.

Also taking place in May 2026 as part of the annual Karlsruher Verfassungsgespräch is a presentation on a study of the early years of the Federal Constitutional Court.

The celebrations will not just be limited to Karlsruhe, but will take place all over the country. Each of the sixteen Justices of the Federal Constitutional Court will travel to one of the sixteen Länder and will be bringing birthday cake. The Justices will meet with students at various schools to talk about the work of the Federal Constitutional Court over a slice of cake.

Further announcements and details on the events and projects for the 75th anniversary celebrations will follow in the coming months on the home page of the Federal Constitutional Court.

The Federal Constitutional Court looks forward to celebrating with you!
